FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The price of gold hit another record high Thursday at more than $1,800 an ounce.  Locally, more people are looking to gold for investment purposes.  Local brokers tell WINK News 60% of customers are selling gold and 40% are in the business of buying.

To buy you can use cash or check but brokers suggest doing your homework.

"Learn what you want to invest in.  Identify what it is you want, know what you're looking for, have a set budget," said David Hill, Bullion Trader, Gulf Coast Coin & Jewelry.

Despite the record high price of gold, it's still below it's peak.  In 1980, gold was worth about $850 an ounce.  Today that $850 would equal about $2,400 an ounce.

Be wary of "fly-by-night" gold buyers
"They're coming into town and staying in hotel rooms. They're here one day, gone the next day. They're not being regulated and they're not licensed," said Joyce.
