Choosing_an_engagement_ring.jpgYou’ve finally found your soulmate and it’s time to propose; making the decision was easy. Picking out the perfect engagement ring is the tricky part. Purchasing a ring for your soon-to-be fiancee should be one of the most exciting times of your life. As with other big milestones in your life, this excitement is all too often overshadowed by stress and fear of purchasing the wrong ring. Don’t let this type of trepidation ruin your big moment. Follow this simple guide to ensure your ring is perfect, just like your significant other:

Step 1: Budget

Before you ever step foot into a jewelry store, decide on a budget. Setting a clear budget before shopping for a ring is important because you need to be realistic about what you can afford. Be smart and only purchase what makes sense for your financial situation. If your budget is less than you (or she) had hoped for, prepare to make some small sacrifices. For example, if a large diamond is the most important part of the ring, you can have it set in white gold instead of platinum and stay within your budget.

Step 2: Go to a Reputable Jeweler

Avoid getting ripped off by only visiting jewelry stores with the right credentials and certifications. Don’t be swayed by someone’s “75% Off Sale”, speak to others about their experiences, and do your research. Don’t be swayed by fancy television commercials that mark-up jewelry and don’t really own it. Only shop at a store that will provide you with a GIA or EGL certification with the diamond, not the store’s own homemade certification. Bottom line is do your research and ask a lot of questions.

Step 3: Pick Out the Ring

Knowing what type of ring to buy can be daunting, but if you can keep an eye out for subtle clues, you can figure it out. Take a look at what she’s wearing. Think about her taste, daily lifestyle, and career to determine what’s appropriate for her. Bigger isn’t always better, especially if she has a job where she uses her hands a lot. Another great avenue is to ask her friends. If all else fails, forget the surprise and get her involved in the ring selection process. She may be more than willing to aid in the process. A line we always like to say is, “It doesn’t have to be expensive to mean something.”

Step 4: Add a Personal Touch

Many modern women are looking for more than just a popular design bought from a jewelry store. Adding a personal touch to her ring and making it one-of-a-kind may be easier than you think. You can have a diamond from the earrings her grandmother gave her incorporated into a brand-new setting, take a ring passed down in your family and add a larger diamond, or a number of other things. Blending a vintage piece with something sparkling and new is a beautiful way to start your life together.

Step 5: Protect Your Investment

Since an engagement ring will be something she wears every day, you’ll want to make sure it’s protected as well. After purchasing, get it appraised and know your insurance options. Insurance options include getting a replacement policy through your jeweler or adding its value to your home insurance. You wouldn’t dream of driving around in a car worth tens of thousands of dollars if it wasn’t insured, so don’t let your fiancée wear a ring that isn’t covered either.

After Step 5, there is only one thing left to do: propose! Exactly how and when you pop the question is up to you, but if you know you’re presenting the perfect engagement ring it will be a lot easier to be confident.
